Why our math looks different.
The traditional tutoring industry relies on a comfortable silence. When I was tutoring for big agencies right here in Austin, the families I worked with assumed I was taking home the vast majority of their expensive hourly bill. I wasn't. The agencies were charging premium rates, but passing on just $20 to $30 an hour to the person actually sitting with the student.
The system only survives because asking a tutor what they make is awkward, so the exploitative agency cut stays hidden. When the families I worked with finally found out the truth, they were shocked.
I built Luminescent to break that silence. By running a leaner, smarter system, we created a model with radically honest economics. You pay a fair, published rate, and our hand-picked educators actually keep what they earn. Because we treat our educators right, we attract the sharpest talent in Austin. I still personally vet and match every single one of them.
